Everyone has stories to tell, and many of us want to put our stories into the hands of readers. The start of a new year presents a good opportunity to take a big-picture look at what you want to accomplish with your writing in the months ahead. 

 

In this session we’ll explore the process of developing your story, from getting the initial spark, through putting it down on the page, to getting it published and out into world. Whether you are writing a novel, a short story, a memoir, or a personal essay, you’ll come away with inspiration, helpful information, and a clear idea of the path that leads to becoming a published author.

About Margaret Lucke 

Margaret Lucke flings words around as a writer and editor in the San Francisco Bay Area. She writes tales of love, ghosts, and murder, sometimes all three in one book. She is the author of four novels—House of Desire, House of Whispers, Snow Angel,and A Relative Stranger(an Anthony Award finalist)—and is the editor ofFault Lines,a short story anthology from the Northern California chapter of Sisters in Crime. She is a former president of Mystery Writers of America NorCal.

Whose head are we in?

Point of View (POV) is the lens through which your story is recorded. In this writing lab, we’ll discuss the main types of POV and their limitations and benefits. We will also examine using multiple points of view, and how to keep your reader oriented. You will discover which POV is best suited for your author’s voice. 

For Deep POV, a technique that can boost your writing to the next level, we will dive beneath a character's surface traits to explore what factors inform her/his perception and world view. You’ll discover how to use dialogue, inner monologues, style-shifting, and other techniques to reveal Deep POV. 

Mastering POV and Deep POV will enhance your story and increase reader engagement!

Palm Springs CA – The Palm Springs Writers Guild continues this season’s skill development Writing Labs with an interactive session highlighting the art and science of crafting short fiction. This ZOOM Writing Lab will be presented from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Friday, September 25. Ariella Moon, author of numerous Young Adult Fantasy books and Covert Hearts, winner of an Aspen Gold Readers’ Choice award (Best Romantic Short Story), will conduct this lively and educational event.

            Ms. Moon recognizes that “the days when short stories were regulated to prestigious literary magazines ended with the rise of new reading platforms and indie publishing.” Platforms across traditional and digital sectors now offer boundless opportunities for writers, including flash fiction, novellas, and micro-stories.  Her Writing Lab will examine how masters of short fiction reveal a character's essence and build emotion and address techniques including "mind the gaps" and Ernest Hemingway's iceberg theory. The lab offers hands-on opportunities to develop short fiction skills with an award-winning author. 

             

The Palm Springs Writers Guild elevates and celebrates aspiring and seasoned writers throughout the Coachella Valley. The Guild supports and encourages those who write non-fiction and fiction, memoirs, and poetry with supportive critique groups, writing and publishing workshops, prestigious speakers, and a popular Book Fair. The Guild seeks to expand and enhance its community of writers with a variety of judged writing contests and a dynamic scholarship program for area students. A New Palm Springs Writers Guild Boot Camp: "Create Compelling Characters"

Presented by Ariella Moon
March 22, 2019, 1:00-4:00, The Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert.

(Price will be announced soon.)

Join award-winning, multi-published author, Ariella Moon, for a three-hour, interactive, intensive workshop on crafting compelling characters. Writers will discover the art of character arcs, five ways to create reader empathy, and how their protagonist’s goals, motivation, and conflicts propel the story. Writers will also learn ways to reveal character, and how to use Deep Point of View to create compelling characters. Attendees should bring a printed copy of the first ten pages of their manuscript (fiction or memoir).

My second author boot camp this year under the auspices of the Palm Springs Writers Guild.
I love working with aspiring and experienced writers! Smaller workshop size allows for lots of one-on-one help with each author's specific writing issues. I may be offering writing workshops during the summer. We'll see how many authors will be staying in the Coachella Valley during the dreaded heat!
