Comic Con Palm Springs

Adventures at Comic Con Palm Springs

Ariella Moon
Comic Con Palm Springs
On Saturday, I was the lone half-Viking/half-fairy (impersonating Talfryn from The Beltane Escape) in a convention hall packed with people embodying Poison Ivy, Storm, Superman, Batman, and various other beings from Star Wars, Marvel Comics, and The Walking Dead, etc. I owed my appearance at the inaugural Comic Con Palm Springs to Bob Gibbs, Community Relations Manager, at Barnes & Noble Palm Desert.

Three of my books, The Beltane Escape, Spell Check, and Spell Struck, filled my tiny book signing table. With a bit of squishing, we made room for my fairy lantern and some swag. Foam board posters for The Two Realms Trilogy and The Teen Wytche Saga had to be tucked under the table as the crowds swelled.

3 Things I Learned About Comic Con Palm Springs

1.     Most of the attendees were Con veterans.
I met only a handful of people who, like me, had never attended a Comic Con before. Most of the people I spoke with were San Diego Comic Con regulars, and they all had high praise for the Palm Springs event. Most were from Los Angeles and other southern California cities.

2.     Comic Con attracts a wide demographic.
Families with babies, young children and pre-teens were out in force, along with teens, and every age up to 92 if you count Stan Lee. No single gender, ethnicity, or age group dominated. Comic Con Palm Springs was a true melting pot.

3.     Photo opportunities abound.
People dressed to be seen and photographed. Barnes and Noble had secured an end booth located on a pedestrian intersection. A steady stream, and in the case of poor Pikachu—a mob—gathered to photograph and meet an amazing array of costumed folk. For the most part, conventioneers were very respectful, and asked permission before photographing. I felt like a Disney princess whenever children reacted with happy surprise when they saw me, a benign little fairy with purple and blue hair. I was the least scary costumed person
at Comic Con. An unfortunate zombie stampede
proved way to scary for some children.

Comic Con Palm Springs has made me a convert. I look forward to next year’s event.

Thank you, Bob, Brian, Marisol, and Brooke, at Barnes and Noble, Palm Desert, for your kind and generous support!

Book Signings and Reader Spotlight

A huge shout-out and thanks to the fans and friends who attended my recent book signing at Barnes and Noble in Palm Desert. I hope to meet more of you at the Readers For Life Literacy Autographing
in July!

B-Fest, Barnes and Noble's recent big teen event, totally ROCKED! I loved signing the first books in my two series, The Beltane Escape from The Two Realms Trilogy, and Spell Check from The Teen Wytche Saga. Here are a few highlights:

The day begins!

Salim Alama adds to his Ariella Moon book collection.
How do you spell your name?

Early birds Suze Datz, Salim Alama, and Monty Poff
Barnes and Noble staff member, Allyson, bought a copy of
The Beltane Escape on her break!

Aspiring author, Sir Jr, brought his whole family!

These teens are wearing their Beltane Escape swag,
a necklace with a skeleton key.

Such lovely sisters!! They bought two books!

Wonderful new fan, Miriam Herrera.

See you all July 13, 2016 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina for the "Readers for Life" book signing! Nora Roberts and Sylvia Day are expected to be among the 400 romance authors (including me!) raising money for literacy. The event is free to the public. Because it is a fundraiser, Romance Writers of America requests you do not bring books from home. Please plan to purchase them at the event.

Summer Festivals: 52 Fun Things To Do in 52 Weeks, #6

Summer is a great time to dive into culture and explore fun, free festivals. Cities large and small abound with free concerts, and art and book festivals. I just returned from the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California, and will be signing books June 11 at B-Fest. So this week’s 52 Fun Things To Do in 52 Weeks is…drum roll…Attend A Book Festival!

3 Reasons to Attend a Summer Festival
1.     They are free.
2.     They appeal to all ages.
3.     They are a great way to discover and meet new authors, artists, and musicians.

B-Fest
Nationwide, Barnes and Noble will celebrate teens, and young adult fiction, on June 10-12, 2016. Expect book signings with YA authors, author panels, swag, and more. Adults read the majority of Young Adult fiction, so I expect B-Fest’s appeal to extend beyond teens.

I will be signing Spell Check and The Beltane Escape at 10 AM, June 11, at the Westfield Mall in Palm Desert. Expect magical swag, and yummy homemade cookies or brownies.

Bay Area Book Festival

Make a note of this event for next year. The free festival included great music at the Center Street Stage, author panels, book signings, and more. I enjoyed meeting new authors and local booksellers, and perusing book-related merchandise.

Do you know of any great summer festivals in your area? Please comment so others can discover these events, too. And if you attend B-Fest, check back and tell me what you thought.

Happy reading!

Four Star Review for Spell Fire

Zili in the Sky

"4 stars in my sky!"

"Ariella Moon does a great job of incorporating the pagan and magical stuff without it seeming unbelievable. When I initially saw the words dragon shaman in the blurb I really didn't expect to like the story, but once I started reading Spell Fire I was quickly engrossed in the plot and the characters."

My thanks to Zili in the Sky for her review! I particularly took note of her comments about to the guys in Spell Fire, Jett and Thor. Hmmm...I think I may have to revisit them at some point! Thor may appear off camera in book 4. I can't see either of them in book 5, but after that...! Thanks Zili for getting me thinking. There is definitely a lot more to Jett and Thor. What do you think? Should I bring them back? Give Jett his own story?

God is Dog Spelled Backward..

For awhile, when you pulled up Spell Struck on Barnes and Noble's Nook Books site, it was shown with Michael Ellerbe's book, Dog is God Spelled Backward. Now, the link shows Spell Struck and Spell Check, Books 1 & 2: The Teen Wytche Saga.

Good news for me, but Miss Gracie is quite unhappy. Perhaps this morning's monsoon severed her spell link. Hmmm...
